What is a CAP-approved program?
The College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP) has approved certain graduate programs in professional psychology that have demonstrated alignment with CAP's academic credentials requirements.
CAP works directly with these programs to ensure that eligible students meet the academic requirements for registration as psychologists in Alberta. This includes requirements fulfilled through their graduate program and any additional undergraduate or graduate coursework.
Graduates who meet all requirements can apply through the CAP-approved programs pathway, which provides a streamlined evaluation of academic credentials without requiring a full course-by-course review.
CAP-approved programs and other graduate programs are held to the same academic requirements. The difference is how compliance with these requirements is established. CAP-approved programs verify their students' eligibility before they apply, although CAP also verifies that individual applicants have met the requirements.
How do I apply through the CAP-approved programs pathway?
Your university must confirm your eligibility to CAP. Completing a CAP-approved program does not automatically make you eligible for this pathway.
If you have completed a CAP-approved program, contact your university to confirm that it will provide your name to CAP as an eligible applicant.
Once your eligibility has been confirmed, you can submit an Application for Evaluation of Academic Credentials through the CAP-approved programs pathway (Pathway 4 under the 2023 Criteria). You must also pay the applicable application fee and arrange for official transcripts and any other required documents to be submitted to CAP.
If your university cannot confirm your eligibility, you may still apply to have your academic credentials evaluated through the regular course-by-course evaluation process by selecting "Other" as your application pathway.
For more information, see Application Steps & Requirements.
What to expect when applying through the CAP-approved programs pathway
The CAP-approved programs pathway provides an expedited evaluation of academic credentials, but applications still require review and approval by CAP.
Before an application can be reviewed, CAP must receive all required documents, including official transcripts and confirmation of degree completion or conferral (if this does not yet appear on your official transcript, a letter is required. Please see the FAQ on this page for more information). CAP must also receive confirmation from your university that you are eligible to apply through this pathway.
After you have paid the application fee, you will see a Documents Received checklist on the dashboard in your MyCAP Login (allow 7-10 business days for CAP to process and upload your documents. Please do not contact us inquiring about document receipt). Once your application is complete, the review generally takes approximately two weeks, although processing times may be longer during busy periods. If your application has not been marked as "Sent for review" within two weeks after it is complete, please contact us at credentials@cap.ab.ca.
If CAP determines that you meet all academic credentials requirements, you will receive an approval decision and can proceed with applying for registration as a provisional psychologist.
Please note that eligibility for the CAP-approved programs pathway does not guarantee approval of your academic credentials. Although your university will have reviewed your coursework to confirm that you meet CAP's requirements, CAP may identify outstanding requirements during its review. In some cases, applicants may need to complete additional coursework, particularly to fulfill the Substantive Content Areas or minimum credit requirements.
We encourage applicants to review their own academic coursework against the applicable Criteria for Evaluating Academic Credentials to ensure that all requirements have been met.

CAP-approved programs and the 2030 Criteria
CAP's new Criteria for Evaluating Academic Credentials take effect on January 1, 2030. The criteria applicable to your application depend on when CAP receives your complete application, not when you completed your degree.
Applications completed and received before January 1, 2030: The 2023 Criteria apply, including the CAP-approved programs listed above (Pathway 4).
Applications completed and received on or after January 1, 2030: The 2030 Criteria apply, including the updated CAP-approved programs pathway (Pathway 2).
CAP is currently reviewing existing CAP-approved programs to determine which will be approved under the 2030 Criteria. Approval under the 2023 Criteria does not automatically mean that a program will remain approved under the 2030 Criteria.
The list of programs approved under the 2030 Criteria will be updated as approval decisions are finalized. Students who expect to apply to CAP in 2030 or later should consult their university and check CAP's website for updates.
