The College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP) invites all registered psychologists, regitered provisional psychologists, and psychology students to the September 26, 2025, Professional Development Event (PDE). CAP proud to offer this free virtual continuing education event. This year’s event is dedicated to Artificial Intellgence (AI). We are very pleased to have AI expert Dr. Leanna Fortunato, Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Director of Quality and Innovation within the Office of Health Care Innovation (OHCI) at the American Psychological Association as our first speaker. Her topic is “AI in Mental Health Care: Opportunities, Challenges, and Ethical Considerations”.
Dr. Fortunato’s presentation is followed by Alberta lawyer, Richard Stobbe, Field Law LLP. In this presentation, Mr. Stobbe will provide an overview of the current status of AI regulation in Canada, followed by a review of AI privacy issues, and the current laws relating to AI and intellectual property (IP), including the latest guidance and governance recommendations.
Dr. Troy Janzen, CAP Deputy Registrar & Chief of Practice will wrap up the event as our final speaker. Dr. Janzen will present on ethics and algorithms with a focus on safeguarding clients in the AI era. This presentation will center on emerging possibilities – virtual therapists, adaptive digital interventions, and AI-driven training and supervision tools. Dr. Janzen will confront the ethical and practical risks: algorithmic bias that could reinforce inequities, threats to client privacy and data security, limits on transparency and professional accountability, and the broader unknowns of delegating human judgment to machines.
Opportunities for questions and answers will be available throughout the PDE.
PDE attendees may count four (4) hours toward their continuing competence requirements. A certificate of registration will be available for those who register for the event. For those who do not register, a recording of the event will be available on CAP’s YouTube channel at a later date. Those who watch the recorded event on YouTube may also claim 4 hours towards their continuing competence requirements by completing a CCP Self-Declaration Form (available on the CAP website here).
